Cistercians in Yorkshire
Description: The Cistercians in Yorkshire project is funded through a grant of £424, 000 from the New Opportunities Fund’s ground-breaking UK-wide digitisation programme, which is designed to make learning materials directly accessible to homes and communities via the internet. The project is creating a web-based learning package analysing the life, history and architecture of Cistercian monks in this region. At the heart of the project are three-dimensional virtual reality re-creations of the abbey churches and monastic buildings. This innovative research makes a major contribution to modern understanding of the architectural construction of these now ruined buildings and sheds new light on the Cistercian use of sacred space. The models are delivered to users within a text-based learning package, which uses recent historical research to explain the history of the Cistercian order and of the Yorkshire White Monks; it also offers insights into daily life within the cloister and the wider contribution made by the order to the region.
