National Academies Communication Award
Description: DEADLINE: APRIL 15, 2004: Each year the National Academies honor individuals with its Communication Awards for excellence in reporting and communicating science, engineering, technology, medicine, and/or interdisciplinary research to the general public. Each winner receives a $20,000 prize for their outstanding work. Candidates include authors, journalists, and producers who have demonstrated excellence in communicating these topics through print, Internet, radio, or television. The awards are given to individuals in three categories: - Book author - Newspaper, magazine, or online journalist - TV/radio correspondent or producer Deadline for the 2004 Awards is April 15, 2004. The Communication Awards are one component of the National Academies Keck Futures Initiative. Designed to realize the untapped potential of interdisciplinary research, the Futures Initiative is funded by a 15-year, $40 million grant from the W.M. Keck Foundation. The initiative will sponsor conferences to bring together outstanding scientists, engineers, and medical researchers to pose new questions and share ideas for interdisciplinary research and communication – among researchers in these fields as well as between researchers and the wider public. The winners of the 2004 National Academies Communication Awards will be honored during the Keck Futures Conference in Irvine, Calif., Nov. 19-21, 2004. The winners will speak about their work and participate in a panel discussion, as well as attend the full conference to continue communication with researchers and scientists alike. The Academies will pay travel expenses for the three winners to attend the conference.

Banff Television Festival
Description: The Banff Television Festival, now commemorating its 25th Anniversary, is a celebration of excellence in international television programming and an exploration of the issues, challenges, creative and business opportunities in television and new media. This year’s Festival takes place June 13 - 17, 2004 at the Fairmont Banff Springs in the Canadian Rockies, and will draw approximately 2,000 television professionals from around the world. Many hours of seminars, plenary sessions, BANFF Master sessions, pitching opportunities and more will be featured.
