For free perusal materials just email me back at gmurphy@snowcrest.net. The cast is flexible. I’ve indicated suggested genders in parentheses below, with F=Female, M=Male, and E=Either where there is truly no preference. In addition many of the parts may and should be doubled or even triple-cast, particularly the drama club members, Munchkins, and Stooges. (7-12m, 16-22f, 10-25e) PLOT OF THE MUSICAL Although Mrs. Grackle is only temporary principal at the high school, she plans to ingratiate herself with the school board with big budget cuts, specifically cuts to the drama program which has been running in the red for years. Naturally, the drama club members and their sponsor, Miss Goldberg, are unhappy with this decision which will probably kill the drama program. When the club shows up at the March school board meeting to protest, they are given one last chance – the school board will help them if they can put on a new version of Wizard of Oz together in one week, with all original songs! The club’s only hope is to enlist the talents of Vincent Van Goth, a student song writer who has become one of the school’s most sullen outsiders, a “Goth” who has just gotten off suspension from all school activities for keying Mrs. Grackle’s car. The drama club reluctantly accepts the challenge and their quirky song-filled version of Wizard of Oz proves is put to the test in the hilarious second act of “Drama Club Must Die!” To add to the complications this show also includes brief scenes from Shakespeare’s “Macbeth” and “Julius Caesar.” Here’s a show which not only gives your audiences a chance to roar with delight, but affords many opportunities for even the most inexperienced of your actors to get some valuable onstage experience. LOTTA - A GOLD RUSH MUSICAL Here is a glittering, golden nugget of musical comedy based on the real-life story of child actress Lotta Crabtree, the Gold Rush version of Shirley Temple. The crusty old Forty-Niners, such as Mother Lode, Veronica Redskirt, Kate O'Clisom and Riffle Pete, come from near and far to watch her sing and dance her little heart out. The tarnished saloon proprieters, Lana DuFree and Homer DaBrave, kidnap Lotta's devoted mother, Mary Ann, in order to cash in on the tiny entertainer's success for themselves. They tell Lotta her mother abandoned her. Despite their lies, Lotta is reunited with her mother and ends up with a family at last! The original score is laden with beautiful folk ballads and rousing ditties like, "You Should Have Been There," "Greed!" "Way Up in Northern California," "The Miner's Song," "My Sweet Mama Dear," and many more. One interior set. “LOTTA” - Book, Music and Lyrics by Gerald P. Murphy 10F, 8M, extras as townspeople, miners, saloon patrons For free perusal, just email me back at gmurphy@snowcrest.net Royalties are $70/60.

A Pop Musical Drama based on the life of Abraham Lincoln
Description: In Spite of Reason This independently produced CD concept album is a pop musical / drama based on the life of President Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War. It is presented as a sung-through musical portrayal of the personal trials and tribulations of one of the most well known figures in history. Although it can be called a pop rock opera, In Spite of Reason can also be labeled as a pop musical drama with rock overtones and intelligent lyrics that entice the mind into thought. It has been described as listening to a cross between modern adult new age alternative, Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita and the Beatles, culminating into it's own unique sound. This is an album that will appeal to those who have embraced and enjoy the diverse pop music of the last 30 years. The intent of In Spite of Reason is not to merely recapitulate the fiddles, fifes, banjos and drums of civil war songs, but instead, to weave a tapestry of modern music as a sound bed to storytelling ( an art form almost completely unheard of today ). This musical work does not attempt to be highbrowed nor rudimentary. All lyrics are sung in styles that are mildly reflective of stage presentation, yet enjoyable by modern radio audiences. Those interested in history, as well as fans of pop musical concept albums such as Tommy or Evita, theatre, story music and even modern musical stage enthusiasts will find In Spite of Reason a refreshingly new presentation of this famous story. It attempts to maintain major historical accuracy of events and even uses words and phrases actually said by the portrayed individuals. This "Original Studio Cast", 90 minute, double CD album is accompanied with a 48 page booklet containing all the lyrics.

Our audiences tell us the number one thing they enjoy about ZACH is the intimacy. We have come to understand that for our audience this refers not only to the close physical proximity of our audience to the actors on-stage, but also to the powerful states of emotional and spiritual intimacy which are work promotes. Transformation is a primary characteristic of the theatre we create, and as characters often transform on-stage before our audiences eyes, hopefully the audience has been engaged in an experience that also carries the tools for personal change on some level. Because we desire a dialogue which is inclusive, ZACH is committed to diversity and is a leader in the state at providing opportunities for artists of all races to participate fully in the artistic process. And because we are committed to building an audience for this art form in the future, we are engaging young Austinites in a variety of programs that are designed to build self esteem and self awareness, and ignite within them the fire of self-transformation that is accessed in meaningful theatrical experiences that carry the tools for change.
